The Countdown candle is very traditional in Denmark. The children gather greenery from their yards or woods and make a fresh creation that is enjoyed all season long. With marks from 1 to 24, the candle was lit each day, and the wax was allowed to melt to the next number, thus marking the countdown to the night of our blessed Savior’s birth. It was a solemn, holy time in our home, and seeing the candle shrink day by day only heightened our anticipation! The Word clearly teaches us to number our days and use our time wisely. Serving others and watching the “time” run out until Jesus comes reminds us to be busy using our days for Him until He comes again!

The traditional white countdown candle I remember from my childhood.
